…Of economical powers
Everybody knows the first note, no need to explain where it comes from. As written on them the two others come from Cuba. Indeed Cuba has two different currencies. The “convertible” or CUC, the one with which you can buy everything, is equivalent to a dollar more or less. You won’t find many of them in the wallet of an average cuban. Most salaries are paid in pesos cubanos or CUP. A CUC is equivalent to 25 CUP.
Tourists are not supposed to use CUP as this currency is mainly used for first need goods by cubans and to access certain types of transportation within the island.
Cubans couldn’t properly live only with the CUP because of its limitation in terms of buying power. for that reason there is a huge black market around the island to exchange the CUP into CUC.
As you may know, Raúl Castro spoke again recently about some political and economical reforms and one of them is the will of keeping only one currency within Cuba. As the CUC has been invented during the crisis of the nineties following the fall of the soviet block, this currency is likely to be the one skipped in this process.
